How to Choose an E-Bike

Start with the ride you want to make—not the biggest motor or the longest advertised range. The right e-bike is the one whose purpose, fit, weight, electrical system, brakes and legal category match how and where you will actually ride.

1. Choose the riding purpose

  • Commuting and city riding: prioritize a comfortable position, lights, fenders, racks, dependable brakes and practical battery removal.
  • Recreation and touring: consider comfort over longer distances, usable range, gearing, carrying capacity and access to replacement parts.
  • Folding and compact transport: compare folded dimensions, total weight, wheel size, hinge design and whether you can realistically lift or store it.
  • Cargo and family use: look at verified payload, rack or box design, stability, braking and the weight of the complete loaded system.
  • Mountain and off-road riding: match suspension, tires, brakes, frame, motor behavior and trail-access rules to the terrain.

2. Check the road-use category before performance claims

Motor power, assisted speed, throttle behavior and documentation can change where an e-bike may be used. A higher number is not automatically a better purchase. Review the product-specific status and our Road Use & Compliance page before comparing speed or power.

3. Understand the motor

Hub motors are commonly positioned in a wheel and can offer straightforward assistance. Mid-drive motors apply assistance through the bicycle drivetrain and can feel natural on hills, but component wear and service needs can differ. Compare nominal/continuous power, torque when documented, sensor type, assist modes and whether a throttle is present. Peak power alone does not describe the complete riding experience.

4. Read battery information carefully

Compare voltage, amp-hours and watt-hours when available. Watt-hours are useful for comparing stored energy, but real range changes with rider and cargo weight, hills, wind, temperature, tire pressure, assist level, speed and repeated stopping. Treat manufacturer-listed range as an estimate rather than a guarantee.

5. Consider weight, storage and handling

E-bikes are usually heavier than pedal-only bicycles. Confirm the complete bike weight, whether the battery can be removed, how many steps or lifts are involved at home, and whether your rack or vehicle is rated for the weight.

6. Prioritize brakes, tires and fit

Heavier and faster bicycles need predictable braking and correctly inflated tires. Check brake type, rotor size when listed, tire dimensions, suspension and rider-height information. Manufacturer fit ranges are a starting point; body proportions, flexibility and riding preference still matter.

7. Verify charging and support

Confirm that the correct charger is included, the connector and local plug are appropriate, and replacement batteries or chargers can be sourced. Review the product-specific manufacturer warranty and German Bike's Warranty & Product Support process.

8. Compare the total ownership experience

Look beyond the headline price. Assembly, delivery, returns, battery replacement, maintenance, spare parts and local service access can matter as much as one specification.
